Following Your Heart does not come easy. I believe that everyone gets one or two opportunities in their life to make a decision that can change their life forever. Unfortunately most people shy away from making that decision and resign themselves to a life of struggle, stress and mediocrity.
I faced such a challenge 10 years ago now in 2002. At that time I was probably at the lowest point of my life. I was 45 years old, single ( after 2 broken marriages ) and was in a job I had grown to hate but a well paid job all the same. I was in IT sales, working a 12 hour day, driving about 60,000 miles a year but on the plus side was earning in excess of 60,000 (S100,000) a year. My health was starting to suffer, I was constantly tired and totally stressed out.
Following Your Heart – The Choices:
I had a choice to make but what would it be. In my mind it was about following your heart but would I be able to do that. My choices were to continue exactly as I was for another 20 years, if I survived that long with the increasing levels of stress, or to move out of my comfort zone and find something that would make me happy and give me a real purpose in life with the chance to create an extraordinary life for me and my children. If I did the latter I would be throwing away the security of my comfortable salary in order to follow my dream. And of course I would face some pretty direct questions from my close friends and family for making such a decision and throwing away my apparent comfy lifestyle.
I made my decision, which was to move out of my comfort zone, I didn't care what anyone thought, I was going to do it for me, it was my life and you only get one life and this is it……..this is not a rehearsal.
Following Your Heart – The Outcome:
As difficult as it was to say goodbye to those times, sometimes you just have to make the break. Do what's right for you, not what you think someone else thinks is right for you! Do what makes you happy, not keep doing something because you think it will keep someone else happy. And do it regardless of what you think others might think of you. Too often, people live an unhappy existence, either in their job or relationship because they fear what others might say if they actually make a break in search of something better. My wife Karen & I have both been there, on all these levels and although in most cases it took us a while to realise what we needed to do to be truly happy, we have got there!
Following your heart was exactly the right thing to do for me.
So was it the right decision? Am I a millionaire, with fast cars and big houses – no I'm not but I'm working towards it!! Within 15 months of making my big decision I met my beautiful wife Karen. We have a gorgeous daughter Sophie who is 4 and and a wonderful and cheeky son Daniel who is 2. I work from home looking after my beautiful children whilst building my business part time, just 20-25 hours a week and have the freedom to do what I want when I want. Is that better than what I had 8 years ago in the corporate world? You bet it is.
With exciting developments just around the corner in our business, we truly believe that the financial rewards we have been looking for and deserve, are just around the corner. Life is just getting better and better by the day.
